Local SEO for SMEs: how to appear first on Google in your city

Imagine that someone in your city searches on Google for "carwash near me" or "beauty salon in Huánuco" or "cheap accommodation downtown." That moment is pure gold: it is a customer with real purchasing intent, looking for exactly what you offer.

The question is: do you appear in that result or does your competition appear?

If you don't have a local SEO strategy, the answer is almost always your competition. And the worst thing is that you don't have to pay a fortune in ads to change that.

What is local SEO and why does it matter to your SME?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the set of actions that make your business appear in Google results when someone searches for something related to what you offer.

Local SEO goes one step further: it focuses on appearing when the search has geographical intent. That is, when someone searches for "hairdresser in [your city]" or simply "hairdresser near me" from their cell phone.

This type of search has very particular characteristics:

  • The user has high purchase intention: they are looking to go or buy soon.

  • The user is close to you geographically, which increases the chances of conversion.

  • Google's "local pack" (the map with three featured results) is the first place most people look.

For physical businesses such as restaurants, beauty salons, carwashes, hotels, clinics or hardware stores, local SEO can be the most profitable source of customers there is.

The starting point: Google Business Profile

If there is only one thing you should do today to improve your local SEO, it is this: create and optimize your Google Business Profile (formerly called Google My Business).

It's free. Any business can create it. And it has a direct impact on whether or not you appear in Google local results.

How to create and optimize your listing

1. Create your profile on Google Business

Go to business.google.com, sign in with your Gmail account, and follow the process to add your business. Google will ask you to verify that you are the actual owner of the business, usually by sending you a code by mail or by phone.

2. Complete all fields without exception

Google rewards complete profiles. Be sure to fill out:

  • Business name (exactly as it appears on your facade or documents)

  • Main category (choose the most specific: "Car Wash" instead of "Local Business")

  • Exact address

  • Open hours (including holidays and special days)

  • Phone number

  • Website (if you have one)

  • Business description (use natural keywords: "Beauty salon in Huánuco specialized in cuts, dyes and hair treatments")

3. Upload quality photos

Profiles with photos receive significantly more clicks than those without. Upload:

  • Photo of the facade of your business

  • Interior photo

  • Photos of your services or products

  • Team photos (builds trust)

You don't need a professional camera. The cell phone is enough, as long as there is good lighting.

4. Keep information up to date

If you change your schedule for the holidays, update it. If you change locations, update it. Google detects inconsistencies between the information in your profile and what users report, and that can harm your positioning.

Reviews: the factor that businesses underestimate the most

Google shows businesses with the most reviews and the best ratings first. It is not the only factor, but it is one of the most important.

The problem is that most satisfied customers don't leave reviews on their own. On the other hand, dissatisfied customers do. That means that if you don't have a strategy for getting reviews, your average rating is going to be artificially low.

How to get more reviews (without doing anything unethical)

The most effective way is to simply order them at the right time: when the customer has just received the service and is satisfied.

You can do it in several ways:

  • Verbally at the end of the service: "If you were satisfied, I would greatly appreciate it if you left us a review on Google."

  • With a small sign at the checkout or reception with a QR code that takes you directly to your business's review page.

  • By WhatsApp, if you already have the client's contact, sending a friendly message with the link.

You can generate the direct link to leave reviews from the same Google Business panel.

How to respond to reviews (including negative ones)

Responding to reviews also improves your local SEO. Google interprets this as a sign that the business is active and committed to its customers.

  • Positive reviews: Briefly thank you and mention any personalized details.

  • Negative reviews: Respond calmly, without becoming defensive. Recognize the problem if it exists and offer a solution. Potential customers who read the negative review will also see your response, and a professional response generates more trust than ignoring the comment.

Your website and local SEO

Having an optimized Google Business Profile is essential, but if you also have a well-built website, the impact is multiplied.

For local SEO, the most important thing on your website is:

Mention your location naturally

Your name, address and telephone number must appear on the site, preferably in the footer of all pages. Not because Google doesn't know about your listing, but because it reinforces the coherence of the information.

Create relevant content for your area

A blog with useful articles for your local customers can generate organic traffic and improve your authority. For example:

  • A carwash could write about "how to protect your car's paint during the rainy season in Huánuco."

  • A hair salon might write about "the best haircuts for the heat."

  • A hotel could write about "what to visit in [city] on your next vacation."

You don't have to be a writer. You just need to be useful to your local customer.

Speed and responsive design

Google penalizes slow sites and those that do not work well on mobile. And it makes sense: most local searches are done from your phone. If your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load or looks bad on a small screen, you're losing customers before they even read what you're about.

Other signals that Google considers

Beyond Google Business and your website, there are other factors that influence your local positioning:

Mentions on other sites (citations): Having your business listed in directories such as Yellow Pages, Yelp, TripAdvisor or other relevant local directories, with consistent information, helps Google verify that you are a real and established business.

Presence on social networks: It is not a direct factor, but having active profiles on Facebook and Instagram with your location well configured contributes to the coherence of your digital presence.

Profile engagement: How many people click on your phone number from Google, ask for directions to your location, or visit your website from your listing. More interactions = Google interprets that you are relevant = better positioning.

A concrete action plan for this week

If you're starting from scratch, here's a realistic plan:

Day 1-2: Create and verify your Google Business Profile. Complete 100% of the fields.

Day 3: Upload at least 8-10 photos of the business, services and team.

Day 4: Generate the link to leave reviews and ask your current customers to leave you one.

Day 5-7: If you have a website, check that your address and telephone number are visible. If you don't have a website, consider it the natural next step.

Local SEO does not give results overnight. But if you implement these actions and maintain them consistently, in 2 to 3 months you will start to see how you appear in searches that you didn't even know existed before.

When do you need professional help?

You can implement the basics on your own. But if you want to go further, with a content strategy, technical site optimization and local link building, that's when it's worth having someone to handle it.
